Local experience

Since 1996

A two-bedroom apartment in Fuengirola left running on air conditioning all day while the guests are at the beach can add 30 to 60 euro to a month's electricity bill, and the landlord usually only finds out when the meter reading lands. Push-button timers stop that happening. They cap each AC session at a fixed run-time, after which the unit shuts down until someone walks back into the room and presses the button again. We retrofit timer controls to existing air conditioning units across the Costa del Sol on apartments, villas and townhouses let on short or long-term contracts. EnviroCare has been installing and servicing air conditioning out of Mijas since 1996.

How a push-button timer works

A push-button timer is a small wall-mounted control wired between the air conditioning unit and its power supply. When a guest presses the button, the timer sends power to the AC unit for a fixed period, normally two hours, then cuts the supply. The unit stops cooling and the room slowly warms back to ambient. If the guest wants the AC back on, they press the button again. The timer overrides the AC's own on-off behaviour without removing any of the temperature, fan-speed or mode controls on the indoor unit or its remote. Guests still adjust the room temperature the way they would in any other rented property, but the unit cannot run unattended for eight or nine hours at a stretch.

  • Two-hour default run-time per button press
  • Mounted in the entry hallway or by the AC return-air grille
  • Overrides the AC supply circuit, not the indoor unit controls
  • Works on any wall split, multi-split or ducted indoor unit

Where push-button timers earn their place

The clearest case is a short-let holiday apartment with self-check-in guests. Owners report a one-month payback on the timer install once the August bill comes in. Long-term rentals also benefit when the tenant is paying a flat rent with utilities included, which is the most common arrangement on coastal lets up to twelve months. Owner-occupied villas with adult children, teenage relatives or extended-family guests staying for the summer also fit the pattern. Properties where the tenant pays utilities directly do not normally need a timer, because the bill itself creates the incentive to switch the AC off.

Energy savings and payback

On a typical Costa del Sol short-let apartment running one bedroom and one lounge AC unit, a push-button timer cuts air-conditioning consumption by 30 to 50 percent over the summer months, depending on how long the AC was previously left running unattended. The hardware and install for a one-room timer fit on the August electricity bill on most rental properties. The fit is non-invasive: no work inside the indoor unit, no disturbance of the F-Gas circuit, no impact on the manufacturer warranty.

How the work runs

From first call to commissioned system

  1. Step 1

    Site survey or photo quote

Send a photo of each AC unit and the wall space where the button would sit, or book a free site visit. We confirm the timer compatibility and the install cost on a fixed-price basis.

  2. Step 2

    Hardware fit

A registered electrician fits the timer between the AC supply circuit and the indoor unit. Most one-unit fits run as a half-day job. Multi-unit fits across an apartment take one working day.

  3. Step 3

    Test and label

We test the cut-off, confirm the AC restarts cleanly on the next button press and label the timer with a short guest instruction. Pictogram-style labels are available in English, Spanish and Dutch on request.

  4. Step 4

    Three-year warranty

The timer carries the EnviroCare three-year parts and labour warranty. The AC unit's manufacturer warranty is not affected by the install because the timer sits on the supply side, not inside the unit.

Push Button Timer

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Will a push-button timer void the air-conditioning manufacturer warranty?

No. The timer sits on the supply circuit between the wall socket and the AC indoor unit, not inside the unit itself. The refrigerant circuit, the indoor unit electronics and the manufacturer warranty are unaffected. We confirm this for owners on the survey.

Can guests override the timer?

Not without physical access to the timer enclosure. Guests can press the button to start a new two-hour session, but they cannot extend the run-time on the current session or disable the auto-cut. The timer behaviour is fixed at install.

What happens if a guest leaves the AC on overnight?

The timer cuts the supply two hours after the last button press. If a guest sets the AC running at 11 pm and goes to bed, the unit shuts off at 1 am. If the room is too warm overnight, the guest gets up and presses the button again for another two hours. Most short-let owners report no guest complaints once a short instruction sticker is on the wall.

Can I fit timers on a multi-split system?

Yes. We fit one timer per indoor unit, normally near the entrance to each room. Multi-split outdoor units do not need a separate timer because they only run when at least one indoor unit calls for cooling or heating. The full install covers all the rooms on the apartment or villa.

Do timers work with ducted systems?

Yes, with one timer wired into the supply circuit to the indoor unit. The cut applies to the whole ducted system at once, which suits open-plan apartments where the whole property is one zone. Where room-by-room control matters more than absolute cut-off, an Airzone fit is the better answer.

How long does the install take?

Half a day for one timer on a single AC unit. A full day for a typical two-bedroom apartment with two or three indoor units. The work is non-disruptive and the property stays usable through the fit.
